Additive manufacturing (AM) describes technologies that build 3D objects by adding layer-upon-layer of material. 3D-printing (AM) can be used for rapid prototyping or to produce fully functional parts. Traditional manufacturing processes have led us to imagine designs that are limited by inherent process constraints. AM eliminates many of these constraints and could be used on an as-per requirement basis for small production quantities, unlike traditional manufacturing processes. It is important to understand the inherent benefits and challenges of this new process so as to be more prepared for opportunities that may arise through this new industry revolution.
